How to store your food. Tips from Thermocold
The Danish Consumer Council har created this overview with good storage tips for the most common types og fruits and vegetables:
Cucumber
Packed in plastic, cucumbers last a week in the refrigerator, but they can not withstand colds.
Oranges, lemons and lime
Most citrus fruits have a few days shelf life at room temperature, so you should keep them in a plastic bag in the fridge. But lemons should be stored in a bowl on the kitchen counter, separate from ethylene-sensitive fruits such as banana and avocado.
Asparagus
Stays for a couple of weeks in a plastic bag in the fridge. If they have become limp, cut off the ends and leave them for a couple of hours in cold water.
Eggplants
Stays fine for 4-6 days at about 8 degrees. Do not store with fruit and vegetables that produce ethylene, such as apples, pears and tomatoes.
Avocado
Stays for 2-7 days, depending on maturity. The brown spot stays in the refrigerator and is therefore best stored in a bowl on the kitchen counter.
Bananas
Store at room temperature, not in refrigerator. A ripe banana has beginning brown spots.
Cauliflower
Holds for up to a month in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Green beans
Fresh beans last longer (5-6 days) in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Broccoli
Wrap and refrigerate where it can last for up to a few weeks. It gets bad quickly if it goes together with products that secrete a lot of ethylene (including apples and tomatoes).
Apples
Stays best at low temperature. The substance separates ethylene, which promotes maturation and decay. Apples (and pears) can therefore affect the decomposition of other fruits and vegetables.
Carrots
With stalks they relax in a few days. Remove the stalk and place the carrots in the refrigerator bag. Then they can stay well for 2-3 weeks.
Garlic
Stays in refrigerator for up to half a year, and 3-4 weeks at room temperature.
Ginger
Ginger can stay fresh for a few weeks in a plastic bag in the refrigerator, but can also freeze.
Strawberry
Do not put the strawberries in the fridge if you are going to eat them the same day. But they can often be cooled if used the next day.
Kiwi
Do not go in the refrigerator. A mature kiwi can last for 3-5 days, while immature lasts a few weeks at room temperature.
Cabbage
Store in a refrigerator.
Onion
Should be stored dry. Avoid both plastic bag and refrigerator. Onions can last for up to 6 months if stored dry and cool.
Melon
Store whole at room temperature, but in refrigerator when cut up.
Paprika
Likes best in refrigerator, in 7-10 degrees. Then red and yellow peppers last for a week, and the greens up to twice as long.
Parsley
Keeps 4-5 days in plastic bag in the refrigerator. Can also be chopped and frozen.
Potatoes
Should be kept dark and cool at 8-10 degrees, but can be sweet in the fridge. If they get too much light, a toxin is formed that makes the potatoes green. The best storage is therefore in a cool cabinet or covered in a dry and cool basement.
Leeks
Stays best at no more than 5 degrees in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Then the shelf life is two weeks. Vegetables with soil should be in the refrigerator’s vegetable drawer.
Pears
In the refrigerator at about 10 degrees, but separate from other fruits and vegetables because the bulbs secrete ethylene which accelerates maturation and decay.
Root vegetables
Put in the refrigerator.
Rucola
Gets bad already after one day at room temperature, but can stay for a week in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Salads
Wrapped and refrigerated.
Lettuce Head
Rinse the salad and let it soak in some moisture. Allow the water to drain and place in a refrigerator bag. You can also pinch the leaves, rinse them thoroughly and store them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Mushroom
Stays longest (about a week) in the refrigerator, in the package you bought them in. Also stays well in the plastic bag in the refrigerator after you clean them. A little tan means nothing; It is a wound healing process caused by enzymes in the fungus.
Spinach
Fresh spinach should be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Then it lasts for a week. Slack leaves become brittle again if placed in cold water.
Squash
Put in the fridge, where they last for about a week.
Tomatoes
The ripening stops in the refrigerator, where the tomatoes lose taste and aroma. Should therefore be stored in a bowl on the kitchen counter.
Spring onions
The spring onion lasts for about 10 days in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
